Well the Holidays are upon us. Splurging on the diet is inevitable for me. I just can't resist turkey gravy and dipping bread for same!! This makes my particular diet more difficult this time of year. I think mainly of the fat and bread involved in all the wonderful meals that are a must-prepare for the season!
And so I want to share a few thoughts and ideas I have on the "seasonal splurges" which will be inevitably happening in the coming few months.
First of all I'd like to comment that splurging is ok. In fact it's more than ok. Who ever wants to go through the season without all the goodies, pies, gravy and etc that goes along with it is not leading a full life!
Tool #1 - TIMING - Give yourself the gift of an extra splurge per week - two splurges each week. In other words leave out all the fat, bread and sugary/starchy foods (yes I mean potatoes of any kind), except for two meals each week, normally I'd say one per week, but right now my goal is two. I prefer to have a realistic goal for myself. Yours may be three, however the point is to keep track!
Tool #2 - BITE RULES - Normal bite rules for me for starchy veges and bread (aka the enemy!!) is 5 bites per meal. If you are having alcohol, a glass of wine or a beer or two, no bites per meal is the norm. However, I relax the bite rules during the Holidays and add one or two bites of dessert. So if I'm having a meal at a friends house during the festive season, I can have 5-7 bites of bread OR potatoes, and two bites of dessert. I feel more polite, so I'm not refusing the pie she worked so hard on. I use Mike, and we "split" dessert with me having only two bites. But I limit to two bites and you know what since I've started limited carbs, sugars and potatoes, a lot of the time that is all I want. DO stick to the bite rules unless you are in a cheat meal.
Tool #3 - ALCOHOL - Alcohol defeats your diet regime. Remember to cut out your sugary/starchy/bready items way down or elminate if you are drinking.

Tool #4 - DE - STRESS - Take time to de-stress about the Holiday. Take extra walks to diffuse getting too caught up in all you have to get accomplished. Take time out to look around at your neighbors decorations or a minute to visit a neighbor you haven't spoken to in a while. Take time out with your animals as they bring with them many anti stress properties - I do not know how they do it! : ) I love my babies.
Tool #5 - ENJOY TO THE FULLEST - enough said. Drink it in, the joy, love, food, family and gratitude of living another year on this beautiful planet.
